How They Combine: The 60 Jiazi Cycle

When you pair each Heavenly Stem with an Earthly Branch, you get a Stem-Branch pair called a "pillar." Since there are 10 Stems and 12 Branches, they cycle through 60 unique combinations before repeating — the famous Sexagenary Cycle (六十甲子).

This cycle has been used continuously since at least the Shang Dynasty (1600 BCE). Every year, month, day, and two-hour period is assigned a Stem-Branch pair.

Your BaZi chart consists of four pillars, each made of one Heavenly Stem on top and one Earthly Branch on the bottom:

Together, these four pillars give you eight characters (four Stems + four Branches) — hence the name BaZi (八字, Eight Characters).
